KKKT NORTHERN CENTRAL DIOCESE

The Northern Central Diocese History

The Northern Central Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (KKKT) was established in 1973, originally known as the Arusha Regional Synod. It was led by Pastor Mesiaki Kilevo, who served as the first leader of the Synod. At that time, the Synod had 30,000 members, 20 parishes, and 110 preaching points.

The second leader of the Synod was the late Bishop Dr. Thomas Olmorijoi Laiser, who served from 1980 to 1986.

In 1986, the Synod was elevated and renamed as the Arusha Regional Diocese, with the late Bishop Dr. Thomas Olmorijoi Laiser becoming its first bishop.

In 2010, the name was officially changed to the Northern Central Diocese, following the administrative changes introduced by the third phase government of the United Republic of Tanzania, which split Arusha Region into two new regions: Arusha and Manyara.

The Diocese continued to be led by Bishop Dr. Thomas Olmorijoi Laiser until 2013, when he was called to rest in glory.

The second bishop of the Northern Central Diocese was Bishop Dr. Solomon Jacob Massangwa, who served until 2023.

The third and current bishop of the Diocese is Bishop Dr. Godson Abel Mollel, who continues to serve in this role.

The Northern Central Diocese offers Gospel-centered services that minister to people spiritually, physically, and mentally across the Arusha and Manyara regions, excluding the areas of Karatu, Mbulu, and Meru. The Diocese currently comprises seven administrative districts: East Arusha, West Arusha, Central Southern Maasai, Northern Maasai, Central Maasai, Southern, and Babati. It oversees a total of 137 parishes, 920 sub-parishes, and serves a congregation of approximately 300,000 members.

In terms of infrastructure and outreach services, the Diocese manages three hospitals, six dispensaries, a tourist hotel, a conference center, three primary schools, six secondary schools, and two vocational training centers.

Geographically, the Diocese spans a vast area encompassing both the Arusha and Manyara regions. To the north, it shares a border with the Republic of Kenya. To the west, it is bordered by the Mara Regional Diocese, the eastern shores of Lake Victoria, Mbulu, and the Karatu District, which falls under the Northern Diocese. On the southern side, it neighbors the Dodoma and Morogoro Dioceses, while to the east, it borders the Meru Diocese, along with the districts of Kaskazini (North), Mwanga, Pare, and Northeast Tanzania.
